HIGHLIGHTS as of December 1, 2008

In November, Nebraska Gov. David Heineman (R) signed a bill that prohibits the prosecution of a person who relinquishes an infant up to 30 days old to an on-duty hospital employee. This statute replaced the state's previous infant abandonment policy, which did not include an age specification and resulted in the relinquishment of nearly three dozen children, most older than 11. The new law is currently in effect.
