POSITION TITLE: Associate Editor (New York City)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting to Guttmacher’s Vice President for Public Education and journal executive editors, the associate editor will edit articles and write digests for the Institute’s two peer-reviewed research journals, Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health and International Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, and follow assignments through editorial and production processes. Work collaboratively with other editors to evaluate submissions to the journals; identify peer reviewers; and conceptualize and engage authors for themed issues, viewpoints and other special features. Attend conferences to solicit papers, raise awareness of the journals and gain knowledge of the field.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree; minimum five years of relevant experience, including heavy substantive editing, as well as editing for style, grammar and general readability; excellent communication, critical thinking, interpersonal, planning and organizational skills; and familiarity with statistics and social science research techniques. Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health field highly desirable. Fluency in French or Spanish a plus.

SALARY:

POSITION TITLE: Communications Assistant (New York City)

START DATE: Immediately

ORGANIZATION

JOB DESCRIPTION

Support Communications team outreach and educational efforts, with particular focus on providing project support, managing publications distribution and electronic outreach.

Serve as an information resource for colleagues and the public
• Respond to requests for general information
• Coordinate electronic and hard copy dissemination of Institute materials
• Assist in writing news releases, web items, fact sheets and flyers
• Provide project support, including material development and event coordination
• Represent the Institute at relevant colleague meetings, events and conferences
• Manage media clips
• Create and/or update media outreach lists as assigned

Provide full range of customer service for publication and subscription orders
• Process and fulfill customer orders received via telephone, fax, email and Web
• Evaluate and respond to requests for complimentary publications
• Manage processing of invoices, check and credit card orders (day-to-day work done by receptionist)
• Prepare publications for shipment (in collaboration with the mail room staff)
• Manage processing of claims for missing orders (work done by receptionist)
• Maintain subscriber lists and coordinate with mail houses, printers, shippers
• Maintain publications archive and inventory of items
• Manage the on-line shopping cart section of the website

Track outreach efforts and provide administrative support
• Maintain database for tracking requests, initiatives and media clips
• Track communications activities and prepare reports for staff as needed
• Coordinate the Institute’s internal intranet site and manage intranet team
• Assist communications staff with travel arrangements and expense reports
• Distribute departmental mail and handle conference and publications mailings
• Assist as needed in all aspects of Public Education division activities, including mailings, subject research, preparation of background materials, record-keeping, list development, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

College degree and some experience with customer service. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet essential. Excellent communications skills. Must be detail-oriented, organized and able to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks and meet deadlines.
